Beats & Roots Festival Vol. 2 RETURNS TO De Nijverheid for a full day built around music, culture, creativity and community.
Beats & Roots brings together Greek Rebetiko and underground Hip-Hop — two genres born in different times and different places, but their roots run deep in the same ground. Both came from the margins. Both carry truth. Both became the voice of people, carrying stories of struggle, resistance, resilience, and joy. Different in sound, but cut from the same cloth.
Expect live bands, sharp lyricists, DJs, graffiti, tattoos, street food, thrift stalls, and artists from across Europe — taking you from bouzouki to boom bap in a single day!
Rebetiko, often called the Greek blues, was born in the underground tavernas and port cities of 1920s Greece — raw, emotional music shaped by love, hardship, rebellion, and everyday life. It gave a voice to workers, refugees, and outsiders. Hip-Hop, born decades later in the Bronx, carries that same raw honesty — a culture built in the streets, shaped by social reality, and driven by the need to speak, connect, and be heard.
What connects them goes deeper than sound. Both speak straight to the people. Honest, unfiltered, and timeless, they turn struggle into expression and survival into culture.
That is Beats & Roots. Not just a crossover, but the meeting of two movements that were always speaking the same language underneath.
This year's edition features two stages: a Folk stage and a Hip-Hop stage, bringing together artists from across Europe alongside tattoo artists, vintage stalls, independent artists' stands, Greek street food, and an open graffiti wall for anyone who wants to leave their mark.
On the Folk stage, Rebetiko Against the Machine return with their united passion for Rebetiko, infusing new paths with a rock sensibility in their original repertoire. The band has been performing around the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece, while they have been on studio recording and releasing single tracks with their original music. They are joined by Arda and The Giannena, whose sound moves through Greek, Cretan, Middle Eastern, Turkish, and Ottoman traditions, blending them with jazz and rock influences into something deep, rhythmic, and alive.
On the Hip-Hop stage, Ground Beef Records returns in full force, with DJ Propo'88 (NL), Bane (HU), Mad Rev (NL), and Ellmatic (NL) – an OG of the Dutch underground Hip Hop scene, known for his deep boom bap roots, years of consistent work, and underground credibility through both his solo catalogue and his connection to Het Verzet.
Also joining the stage are emerging and established artists including Danny (GR), Soluta (CY), and Chopo (CY), each bringing their own voice, style and energy to the festival.
Headlining the night are Sponty (GR) and TnT (GR) x DJ Gzas (GR)! Three heavyweight names from the Greek Hip-Hop scene. Sponty moves through politically charged, psychological, and poetic territory, bringing a sharp underground identity and a strong lyrical presence. TnT, x DJ Gzas also known as members of the legendary Rationalistas, comes with explosive stage presence, direct and socially conscious bars, the kind of energy that raises the roof. Their presence pushes Beats & Roots Vol. 2 to a new level and gives this year's edition a strong link to the current Greek rap scene.
But Beats & Roots is more than a music lineup. It is a space where people, stories, and cultures meet. Alongside the stages, the festival also features:

Beats & Roots brengt Griekse rebetiko en underground hiphop samen — twee genres die in verschillende tijden en op verschillende plekken zijn ontstaan, maar waarvan de wortels diep in dezelfde grond liggen. Beide komen uit de marges. Beide hebben waarheid hoog in het vaandel. Beide werden de stem van het volk, met verhalen over strijd, verzet, veerkracht en vreugde. De genres klinken anders, maar uit hetzelfde hout gesneden.
Verwacht livebands, scherpe lyricists, DJ’s, graffiti, tatoeages, streetfood, vintagekramen en artiesten uit heel Europa — die je in één dag meenemen van bouzouki naar boom bap.
