A day-long celebration of music, culture, eras, and creativity—Beats & Roots brings together Greek Rembetiko and underground Hip-Hop. Two genres different in sound, but cut from the same cloth.
Born in the underground tavernas of 1920s Greece, Rembetiko is often called the Greek blues—a raw, emotional style of music rooted in love, rebellion, and resilience. Like Hip-Hop, it was created by communities on the margins, turning lived struggles into art and truth. Both speak directly to the people—honest, unfiltered, and timeless—carrying stories that move from survival and struggle to celebration and joy.
From live bands and lyricists to DJs and graffiti, Beats & Roots brings together a diverse lineup of acts from across Europe.
The Hip-Hop side, features Mira (GR) and Vikkie (GR)—two of the most powerful and authentic female voices in the Greek rap scene today. Mira blends old-school rap foundations with spiritual depth and melodic influences, while Vikkie brings a raw, confident flow, performing mainly in English and adding an international edge to their sound. Together they form one of the most exciting duos coming out of Greece right now!
Sharing the top of the bill is Mad Rev (NL), the Dutch-English MC known for his deep roots in ’90s boom bap and g-funk culture. Based in Amsterdam, Mad Rev has made his mark both solo and as part of crews like Pak De Stad Terug and Els Jam. He’s shared stages with legends like KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane, and Masta Ace, carrying forward the energy of golden-era hip-hop with sharp flows and a contagious love for the craft.
Closing the night is none other than DJ Propo’88—Dutch beatmaker, DJ, and founder of Ground Beef Records—an independent label dedicated to quality boom bap. With a rich history and legacy in the underground Hip-Hop scene, known for his work with the Da Shogunz crew and his international work as part of Certified Craftsmen, it’s an honour to have him bring his energy to the Beats & Roots dancefloor and spin everything from classic boom bap to groove-heavy breaks. He’ll be joined throughout the night by fellow Ground Beef Records artists Mad Rev and Bane —a rising MC already turning heads with his gritty presence and sharp delivery across the underground scene.
We’re also joined by a wave of emerging and established Hip-Hop artists including Soluta (CY), Danny (GR), Negen (NL), and Bane (HU).
On the Rebetiko side, we welcome the powerful presence of Rebetiko Against the Machine— With their united passion for Rebetiko these musicians infusing new paths with a rock sensibility in their original repertoire. The band strives to uphold the intimate and historical elements of Rebetiko while infusing their own experiences and perspectives into their lyrics and Original compositions. The band has been performing around the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece, while they have been on studio recording and releasing single tracks with their original music.
They’ll be joined by Arda and The Giannena— Influenced heavily by the Middle Eastern and Eastern Mediterranean sound and scales, Arda and the Giannena combines music originated from the Middle Eastern, Turkish, Greek, Cretan and Ottoman traditions and mix it with a touch of Jazz on their sound and the song structure as well as Rock influences on the music they perform. The goal of their music is to excite the listeners, draw them into the music, the sound and the stories behind the songs and put them on their toes with the irresistible urge of dancing with the rhythms they play. East Med Syndicate completes the lineup, as a collective of musicians from Cyprus and Greece. Their repertoire blends traditional music from Cyprus, pre-war Rebetiko, and folk tunes from the Greek islands, Macedonia, Thrace, and Epirus. The band respects the original timbre of the music while opening it up to experimentation, with fresh arrangements and unexpected orchestrations.
